Basketball Hawthorn, BH (formerly Hawthorn Basketball Association) is a member association of Basketball Victoria which operates under the auspices of Basketball Australia. BH is one of the top 10 largest among the Victorian associations, with respect to numbers of registered players.
Two competitions run sequentially: Summer Competition covers school terms 4 and 1, followed by the Winter Competition in terms 2 and 3. There are no games on public holiday weekends or during school holidays. The competitions are age-based on the 2-year groupings used throughout Australian basketball. BH uses Under 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 23 age groups.
Player eligibility is assessed on the standard 31 December cut-off in the year that the season ends for both competitions. Each age group will have a number of divisions, depending upon team numbers.
There are more than 600 teams in the junior competition, 150 teams in the senior competition and over 7000 registered players. The under U9 to U18 Junior Boys and Girls play on Saturday afternoons, a decision taken to accommodate the school sport commitments of many of the players and the availability of venues, that are predominantly school facilities hired by BH on a regular and ongoing basis. Games on Saturdays are scheduled from 9.45am until 6.45pm, using 45-minute time slots with U9’s commencing at the start of the day followed by the rest of the age groups in age order. U23 teams play on Sunday afternoons.
BH also runs various senior competitions mid week and enters Hawthorn Magic representative teams in graded levels of Victorian Championships and Victorian Junior Basketball Leagues on Friday nights with for than 40 teams across Boys and Girls Under 12, 14, 16, 18 and 21 levels. Representative teams provide additional training and development for keen players.
